Middle aged mouthy mammas of mirth, Nolan and Briggs, use daily stuff for laugh-a-minute show

If you haven’t heard comedy queens, Mandy Nolan and Ellen Briggs, in action, you are probably missing out on two of Australia’s funniest girls.

Women Like Us is the ideal show to wind down after a long week with Mandy Nolan and Ellen Briggs very likely to keep you in stitches.

The two ace comedians take no prisoners in their rollicking show, which comes to Bryan Brown Theatre, Bankstown on Friday, June 14. This is the only Syndey show in their latest Australian-New Zealand tour.

Known proudly as the middle aged mouthy mammas of mirth, Nolan and Briggs are fresh from entertaining and winning accolades at Adelaide Fringe Festival.

They also sold out at the Melbourne Comedy Festival.

Mother of five Nolan, who write a regular column for her local newspaper, got into comedy which studying for her journalism degree.

“I doing my journalism degree at the uni when I started doing comedy there, using it as an outlet for some of the ridiculous things I heard or saw,” said Nolan, 51, who has appeared

on ABC and SBS shows.

“Now I am a professional comedian, and with Ellen, do between four to six shows a week.

“Being middle aged women, a lot of our conversations and topics resonate with the audience, many of whom come and tell us after the show that they can relate to our jokes.

“We talk about everyday things including kids, family, the struggles we face, politics and people love it, saying that it makes it normal for them too.

“I would say there are other great women comics out there but we are pretty unique and have different personalities.

“Ellen, whose husband works for (MotoGP ace) Valentino Rossi and is out of the country for eight months of the year, joined my comedy classes because she was bored.

‘But she was so funny and I pushed her to continue doing it because she is fantastic.”

Briggs, 50, is said to be the prude to Nolan’s crude. She is a national

finalist for RAW comedy and winner of Foxtel Comedy Channel’s Be A Comedian.

As Briggs puts it, they are ‘the bogan woman’s thinking woman and the thinking woman’s bogan’.

“It’s not a show just for women,” said Briggs.

“In the same way a comedy show by two men would never be seen as a bloke’s only show. Women Like Us is about making our experiences universal rather than niche.

“And as it turns out, there are a lot more Women Like Us out there then we ever realised. “There’s even a growing tribe of men like us too.”

Nolan and Briggs, who have separate one hour gigs at the show, have a talent for improvising depending on the audience, so sit back and enjoy one of the best comedy gigs you are likely to experience.
