A man allegedly exposed himself to a young girl while she was playing in the toy aisle inside a Kmart store in Sydney’s southwest, a court has heard.

Ayub Bin Saleh, 31, appeared before Bankstown Local Court on Friday via audio visual link and entered no pleas to the charges of intentionally carry out sexual act with child younger than 10 years and wilful and obscene exposure in/near public place/school.

Police allege Saleh, who is on a student visa and living at Bankstown, exposed himself to an eight-year-old child at the Bankstown Centro shopping centre between 6:15 and 6:20pm on Thursday. He was arrested later that night after attending Bankstown police station.

Saleh was represented by Shaheenah Sabah Ali from Legal Aid who applied for a release application due to her client’s “lack of criminal history”.

The police prosecutor opposed bail, telling the court the alleged incident was of “extremely concerning offending”.

“In the toy section of Kmart in Bankstown he committed an act towards an eight-year-old child who was playing in the toy aisle while their mother was meters away,” the prosecutor said.

The police prosecutor said Saleh posed the “most significant risk to the most vulnerable people in our community”.

Magistrate Brett Shields said Saleh allegedly committed a “serious sexual offence against a very young child who appeared to be chosen at random in a public place”.

Mr Shields said while Saleh participated in a police interview, his explanation behind the alleged incident was “implausible to say the very least”.

Saleh was refused bail and the matter will return to Bankstown Local Court on September 7.
