An elderly couple have escaped serious injury after their car crashed into a parking ramp barrier which prevented them from plummeting two storeys on to the road below.

The accident happened about 12.25pm today at Roselands Shopping Centre in southwest Sydney.

Campsie police crime manager Chief Inspector Paul Albury said an elderly couple aged in their 80s were in the car and the female driver was travelling along the down ramp in the shopping centre car park.

“It appears she has accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake, crashing through a barrier and setting off the airbags,” Inspector Albury said.

“Pieces of concrete have split off and fallen onto another car beneath the ramp.”

Inspector Albury said a woman travelling in the other car was shocked by the incident but otherwise uninjured.

The elderly couple were not serious injured but were taken to hospital for assessment.

Shopping centre management have closed the ramp so that structural engineers could assess the damage.

GUN RECOVERED

The accident occurred as Campsie police were responding to a man reported to be carrying a gun near Canterbury Hospital.

Inspector Albury said a taxi driver was transporting a man near the hospital around noon when the man got out of the car to do something.

The driver then saw what appeared to be a pistol sticking out of the back of the man’s pants.

“He contacted police and officers were within seconds,” Inspector Albury said.

“We recovered an air pistol on the footpath nearby.”

A man is currently in police custody assisting police with their inquiries and he is expected to be charged later today.

The taxi driver as not injured and was helping police during the investigation.

“He did a great job,” Inspector Albury said.
