A 10-year-old girl in school uniform was out shopping with her grandparents when a man sexually touched her in the toy aisle of a southwest Sydney Kmart, a court has heard.
Kingsgrove man Liam Grant, 26, faced Bankstown Local Court last week and pleaded guilty to a charge of intentionally sexually touching the child at the Roselands Centro Shopping Centre Kmart.
Court documents state Grant entered the store about 3.49pm one afternoon in August and began perusing the aisles before spotting the unsupervised girl in the toy section.
CCTV footage from inside the store shows Grant loitering in the aisle while the girl browsed the shelves, before walking purposely towards her and intentionally reaching for her bottom.
The incident startled the victim, who walked away without telling her grandparents what had happened, the documents state.
Grant exited the store, 10 minutes entering, without buying anything.
Later that evening, the young girl told her father about the incident and a report was made to Campsie Police Station detailing how the man “pinched (her) bum”.
During investigations, officers watched further CCTV footage recorded within the shopping centre earlier in the day.
It showed Grant walking past another girl in school uniform and purposely swinging his arm to make contact with her despite having “ample room”, court documents state.
Grant was arrested in Kingsgrove more than a week after the incident.
He was taken to Campsie Police Station, where he declined to be interviewed.
When he faced court last Thursday, he made an unsuccessful application to vary his bail conditions.
Grant was released on conditional bail, with his case adjourned in order for him to undergo a psychological assessment ahead of sentencing on October 24.
He must abide in the interim by bail conditions, which include reporting to Hurstville Police Station daily, surrendering his passport and not applying for a new one.
