A rising number of drones have been detected flying around controlled airspace near Bankstown Airport.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority claim drones have been flying over or approaching the airspace where aircraft take off and land on weekends and afternoons.

CASA manager of remotely piloted aircraft system operations Scott Duffy said there had been a rise in drone activity and noncompliance with drone safety rules within 5.5km of Bankstown Airport.

“As drones continue to soar in popularity especially after Christmas, it is important users inform themselves about where they can and can’t operate their drone, if they need to be licensed and the dangers of flying drones near airports,” Mr Duffy said.

According to CASA, drones weighing more than 250g flown within 5.5km of a controlled airport are prohibited.

Operators can only operate drones near a non-controlled airport or helicopter landing if there are no crewed aircraft flying and you stay outside the airfield boundary.

More to come.
