Greenacre: Bellal Abdullah allegedly assaulted, resisted police officer

A man wanted over an alleged violent incident in which he allegedly spat on a police officer was arrested after a social media livestream outside court.

Australia's Court System

A social media livestream outside a courthouse ultimately led to the arrest of a man wanted over an alleged attack on a police officer.

Bellal Abdullah, 29, of Greenacre, was arrested in March after his information was shared to the public as part of ‘Operation Persistence’, targeting wanted individuals through a public push on social media.

When Abdullah’s information was published online, a member of the public told police the 29-year-old was livestreaming outside Bankstown Court and he was later arrested on the same day.

The Greenacre man was charged in April 2021 with assaulting an officer in execution of duty and resisting an officer in execution of duty. He failed to appear in court and was convicted in his absence, with a warrant issued for his arrest, according to police facts tendered in court on Thursday.

Police documents tendered to the court claim Abdullah attacked police officers who were investigating a serious assault in Greenacre.

In those same documents, police claim their investigation led to the arrest of a number of Adbullah’s family members at the scene, who were allegedly resisting arrest.

During a prolonged scuffle, police facts tendered to the court claim one officer was left with a bleeding knee.

Abdullah allegedly refused to comply with police orders to get on the ground, and was yelling at police, and attempted to involve himself in the arrest of his family members, according to the police facts.

Police also allege Abdullah spat on an officer’s uniform after being placed in a police vehicle, according to the police facts.

Police documents claim Abdullah is currently unemployed and earns an income from social media app TikTok.

Abdullah is going to be recontesting the charges he was originally convicted on in his absence, with his lawyer applying for an annulment, and is scheduled to be heard on May 5 at Liverpool Local Court.
