TEN bus shelters have had their glass panes smashed in wanton acts of vandalism in Canterbury Bankstown over a two-week period.

Bankstown Police are appealing for witnesses after vandals targeted the shelters in Bankstown, Bass Hill, Georges Hall and Yagoona in late October and early November.

Bankstown Police crime co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Helen Beileiter said witnesses are needed to track down those responsible.

“Details provided by witnesses are often what we need to find those responsible for vandalism,” Snr Sgt Helen Beileiter said.

She told the Express a witness took a photograph of the alleged vandal after a shelter at Glassop Ave, Yagoona, was damaged on October 12.

“Following investigations a male from Georges Hall was arrested and charged o October 21, with malicious damage,” Snr Sgt Beileiter.

Mayor Khal Asfour said vandalism is affecting many people.

“We urge anyone who has information on bus shelter vandalism to contact us.”

Mayor Khal Asfour said the vandalism is affecting many people.

“Bankstown, Georges Hall and Yagoona seem to be the hot spots, so I ask people in those areas in particular to be on the lookout,” Cr Asfour said.

“It’s disgusting that some people get their kicks out of destroying property, which is actually installed to help members of their own family.

“These shelters are installed on busy bus routes to protect families, the elderly and people with disability from the weather.

“In one careless and thoughtless act, the vandals are impacting dozens of people.

“So, I am calling on residents to help with our investigation.

“If they saw or know of any information relating to these crimes, please call the Police.”

The council said repairs will be carried out by Adshel, the media company which handles the advertising at these shelters.

Adshel did not respond to our queries at the time of going to press.

Anyone with information can call the police stations at Bankstown (9783 2199), Campsie (9784 9399) or Burwood (9745 8499).
