Residents of three suburbs in southwest Sydney will be able to enjoy free fitness and more green spaces by next year.

The WestConnex project — which costs more than $3m — began this week to provide a revitalised M5 linear park for Kingsgrove, Bexley and Beverly Hills.

A Transport for NSW spokesman said the 3.3km upgrade will include a new fitness loop with 18 outdoor gym pods, a sporting facility upgrade, landscaping, picnic facilities and sign posts.

Gym pods include chin up bars, gymnast rings, a jungle gym and stationary bikes.

There will also be around 23km of new and improved cycleways and walkways when WestConnex is finished in stages by 2023 if all goes to plan.

“WestConnex will dramatically improve connectivity and recreation opportunities across Sydney with an additional 18ha of public open space,” the spokesperson said.

“Some parts of this park have not had an upgrade since it first opened 18 years ago so I know this investment of more than $3 million will be welcomed by the local community.”

The park would also host new permanent outdoor art installations.

The M5 Linear Park enhancements will be delivered in two stages by Ventia Boral Amey Joint Venture. The first stage includes the areas around Allambee Cres, Tallawalla Reserve, Forrester Reserve, Lundy Ave, Nairn, Bonalbo, Girraween, Kooreela and York streets, Kingsgrove.

Stage two includes work at the park land adjacent to Rosebank Ave, Armitree and Glamis streets and Garema Circuit.

WestConnex will provide 33km of motorway to link western and southwest Sydney with the city, Kingsford Smith Airport and Port Botany precincts.

WILL YOU BE AFFECTED BY STATION CLOSURES?

It is being mainly constructed in the M4 and M5 corridors and includes 14km of road above ground and 19km of tunnels, including a new tunnel linking the two corridors.

Transport for NSW is also working with Canterbury-Bankstown Council to build a new skate park and a basketball half-court on land used for the new M5 construction at Bexley Rd, adjacent to Beaumont Park and the M5 East.

Pedestrians and cyclists can continue to use the park and shared pedestrian and cycle path while the work is being carried out.
