The communities of Campsie and Riverwood have welcomed in the Lunar New Year with music, dance, food and good fortune.
To celebrate the Year of the Rooster, Campsie came alive today with hundreds of residents gathering in Anzac Mall and Beamish St to watch a traditional lion dance as it proceeded through the CBD.
The celebrations follow on from the successful Lunar New Year event held at Saigon Place, Bankstown, last month which attracted more than 10,000 people.
Canterbury-Bankstown Council administrator Richard Colley said the city’s Lunar New Year celebrations had become one of the key highlights for residents and visitors on the council’s
annual events calendar.
“Now that we’re the largest council in Sydney, locals and visitors look to us for the best and
brightest celebrations,” Mr Colley said.
“I’m proud to say our event was filled with colour and liveliness — everything a Lunar New
Year should be. We have many families with Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese
backgrounds in our community and for them the Lunar New Year of the Rooster brings
exciting opportunities and the prospect of a prosperous year ahead.”
Watson federal Labor MP Tony Burke, Canterbury state Labor MP Sophie Cotsis, Lakemba state Labor MP Jihad Dib and Chinese Australia Services
Society chairman Dr Bo Zhou also attended the Campsie celebrations.
In Riverwood on Monday, the Chinese community and residents from different cultures gathered at Riverwood Community Centre for Lunar New Year.
The event was organised by Canterbury Bankstown Harmony Group and the Riverwood Twilight Rouge Chinese Dancing Group.
Harmony Group chairman Karl Saleh said the event included colourful cultural performances, lunch and lucky door prizes.
“I am proud to work side by side with diverse key community to implement a positive impact on our quality of life and cultural diversity,” Mr Saleh said
Various MPs, including Banks federal Liberal MP David Coleman attended, as well as representatives from the community centre, Housing Department, Campsie police and PAYCE.
