East Hills Boys High School is one of the biggest supporters of the Premier’s Reading Challenge since it began in 2001, with positive results flowing into the school’s NAPLAN results.
Librarian Susan Turnbull embraced the challenge in 2001 to encourage students to rediscover their passion for learning.
Now Rheema Ayoubi and junior students have ensured it continues to grow and take it to another level.
“The Premier’s Reading Challenge has been implemented into our Stage 4 literacy programs, running parallel with our Year 7 Accelerated Reading Program, and Year 8 Literacy Program,” Ms Ayoubi said.
“Through the challenge, students have had many benefits including building their vocabulary and developing their literacy skills.
“The NAPLAN results have improved as a whole and students feel more confident to explore new texts, and discuss them with their peers and teachers.
“We are so proud of our student’s achievements, and seeing their passion in reading to continue to grow.”
This year, students were encouraged to “Catch the reading bug”, to tie in with the
theme of the 2019 PRC poster which features artwork by Australian author and illustrator Aura Parker.
■ The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge commenced in 2001 and now involves students
in kindergarten to Year 4 and Year 9. There are four challenge levels (K‐2, 3‐4, 5‐6
and 7‐9), each with their own booklist.
