Earlwood rookie DJ Irene Andrews will get to perform overseas

Earlwood’s Irene Andrews has only been DJing for two months but she now has the chance to spin the decks at one of the world’s hottest music festivals.

Irene Andrews has only performed one gig as a DJ but her skills spinning the decks

means she will feature at the world’s hottest music festivals.

Andrews aka DJ Andi, has won the NSW section of the Your Shot DJ competition and said she entered to try something new, something that she’d always been drawn to.

She has only been learning to DJ for the past two months.

“My best friend competed last year in the competition and raved about how incredible this experience is,” the 21-year-old Earlwood resident said.

“She encouraged me to give it a try and it’s turned out better than expected.”

Andrews said she never thought she would actually win the competition, where she had to perform her first ever DJ set ono her 21st birthday in front of a huge crowd at Home nightclub in Darling Harbour.

Your Shot has launched the careers of DJs such as Tigerlily, J-Trick, Hydraulix, Go Freek and Nyxen.

“Being quite a shy girl, I was extremely nervous to compete in front of the crowd during the final battle but getting on that stage and doing something I’ve grown to love and have a passion for, the nerves disappeared straight away,” said Andrews.

“I am really shocked to win the event, everything flowed well that day for me.”

Andrews, who is also a hip hop dancer and works as the bar manager at Joe & the Juice in Barangaroo, is now waiting to hear which international festival she will be performing at. The options include Imagine Festival in the US, Croatia’s Hideout Festival, Snowbombing in Austria and Chasing Summer in Canada.

“The prizes are mind blowing, I’m lucky enough to have the chance to fly and perform at one of the six international festivals and I couldn’t be more excited,” said Andrews, who enjoys house and techno music.

“After this whole experience I’m hoping to continue to pursue a career in DJing, that is my dream.

“These opportunities that Your Shot have given me are crazy and I cannot wait to see what the future holds after getting the opportunity to play in front of massive crowds.”

For her DJ work, Andrews said she uses her usb with mp3 files.

The wild card winner was Gabriel Espinosa from Camden.

Your Shot, is the brainchild of Australian entrepreneur Steve Pillemer and has been operating for 10 years. It has helped more than 6700 aspiring DJs realise their dreams in the Australian music industry. Last year there were more than 10,000 registrants and 700 contestants.

An American offshoot has now been added, Your Shot USA, which kicks off in Los Angeles this month.
