Police divers have retrieved human remains, believed to be those of the missing Bankstown fisherman near Red Point at Port Kembla.
A police spokeswoman confirmed the remains are believed to be Van Hai Tran, 66, who went missing on August 24 while rock fishing at Hill 60.
His remains were spotted by a recreational diver who informed the police at 1.30pm on September 7.
Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District and Marine Area Command attended the location before police divers began their search.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Earlier, Inspector James Dark of Lake Illawarra police had appealed for the public help to find Mr Tran, who had left Bankstown on the morning of Saturday, August 24, to go fishing at Port Kembla.
“He’s come down fishing by himself and he hasn’t returned home, and as a result some family came down today and reported him missing,” Insp Dark said.
Insp Dark said while it was not unusual for Mr Tran to go fishing at Port Kembla for a few days at a time, but his family had become concerned due to lack of contact with him.

The choppy, windy conditions had made the search difficult, with Inspector Dark warning other fisherman to take care in poor conditions.
“If you are alone obviously tell people where you are going fishing, the time expected you’ll be out of there and certainly water life jackets,” he said.
