THE historic Hurlstone Park Bowling Club will be demolished — after asbestos and structural issues were found in the decaying building.
The clubhouse, built in 1944, sits on Crown land but the club is responsible for its upkeep.
An assessment of the site was prompted in 2015, after the former Canterbury Council rejected a five-year extension of the club’s lease, and put the club on the open market.
The assessment revealed $200,000 worth of structural defects including loose bricks, insufficient structural support on the dance floor and friable asbestos in several parts of the building.
The building was also deemed not fire safe and has no disability access.
“These issues have developed over the life of the building and have not been addressed,” a council spokesman said.
“The entire building contains asbestos and peeling lead paint. The only way to claim the site is hazardous material free, is to demolish the building.”
But the bowling club president David Farrell said they had not been given enough time to address the issues and were being “railroaded”.
“They’ve got to give us time, we can’t do everything at once,” Mr Farrell said.
“They’re railroading us.”

He said the club was considering legal action against the council.
At last week’s council meeting it was decided that the council would pay for $27,000 of urgent work in order to give the club three months to remove historic memorabilia.
The club will close on June 30.
The council will then conduct an Expression of Interest process for the site and demolish the clubhouse.
