A businessman has been caught driving more than five times over the legal blood alcohol limit after enjoying half a bottle of white wine and garlic prawns during an afternoon pub lunch.

Craig Ronald Prenter, 46, appeared before Bankstown Local Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to high range drink driving after police pulled him over for a random breath test at Macarthur Ave, Revesby on June 21.

Documents tendered to court state when police stopped Prenter he was “well affected by alcohol”.

“Prenter’s breath smelt of intoxicating liquor and his eyes were glazed and bloodshot,” the facts state.

After returning a positive breath result he was arrested and taken to Revesby police station where he returned a reading of 0.269.

Prenter, from Wollongong, told police he drank half a bottle of white wine at a bar in North Wollongong with a meal of garlic prawns.

“He stated that he returned home and had a sleep then drank another self poured white wine prior to leaving Wollongong to see his partner in Panania,” the facts state.

Prenter’s lawyer told the court his client had been driving for almost three decades and had undergone a treatment plan to address his alcoholism.

He said his client had started to go a solo business and turned to alcohol which was “not a solution”.

Magistrate Te’res Sia said she accepted Prenter’s criminal history was “not unblemished but limited”, including a low range drink driving charge in 2010.

She said the incident was serious as “by virtue it’s an extremely high reading”.

Prenter was convicted and sentenced to a two-year community correction order.

He was issued a mandatory interlock system for 24 months and had his licence disqualified for six months backdated to the time of the offence.
