The owner of a car which had plunged into Cooks River, Canterbury more than three months has finally been able to remove it.

Ausgrid has confirmed, after the Express contacted them that they had expedited matters to help the owner of a car to finally remove it from Cooks River.

The crane which was to lift the car out of the water was unable to do so until energy providers Ausgrid gave them permission due to possible damage to the overhead power lines.

A driver of the car, in his 20s escaped without injury, after it crashed through a fence off Canterbury Rd and landed in the rive about 5.30am on August 28.

The driver had managed to escape from the car to the bank by the time police and paramedics arrived at the scene.

A local told the Express he was disgusted at how long it has taken to remove the vehicle, saying it must be polluting the river with its leaking oil.

“On October 10, a crane company requested Ausgrid cover the power lines above the site with rubber sleeves so they could remove the car,” an Ausgrid spokesman told the Express.
“The covers were installed on November 7 (this work can take up to eight weeks but was completed within three weeks).

“On December 4, a request was made for the covers to be removed.”
