A southwest Sydney council has committed to delivering a new cycleway after securing just under $1m in federal funding.
Canterbury-Bankstown Council will receive more than $877,000 under the Active Transport initiative to design and construct a new cycleway along Phillips Ave in Canterbury.
The grant will be used to fund upgrades including improved pedestrian and bicycle crossings, signage, and markings.
Federal member for Watson Tony Burke said: “People want to be able to ride their bike in a space where they’re not competing with traffic.”
“Other parts of Sydney have already had access to this and now the area will get its fair share,” he said.
Canterbury-Bankstown Council Mayor Bilal El-Hayek welcomed the funding announcement.
“We have a vision for this project and this grant will enable us to improve on connections to the Cooks River,” Mr El-Hayek said.
“It’s about building pathways for families who want to walk or cycle safely. It’s also about providing connections for workers dodging city traffic.”
Last year, council officially reopened the Canterbury Rd underpass after completing upgrade works to improve the 100 metre stretch of the Cooks River Cycleway.
The $9m project was delivered in partnership with City of Canterbury Bankstown and Transport for NSW’s Get NSW Active program, with grant funding of more than $3.5m.
