Canterbury Bankstown Council is planning to construct two new multi-purpose facilities, on the existing sites of Canterbury and Max Parker Leisure and Aquatic Centres.

The twin project is a part of a 10-year plan for the city’s leisure and aquatic centres, following a two-year review which included independent experts and input from the community.

However, the draft plan confirms the recommendation of the North West Local Area Plan to close the Wran Leisure and Aquatic Centre and provide a new multi-purpose community centre in Villawood at Thurina Park.

The Greenacre Leisure and Aquatic Centre, which has been non-operational for a number of years, is also recommended for closure with an alternate leisure and aquatic experience

provided by the development of a new water splash park in Greenacre.

The draft plans proposes the facilities at Birrong and Roselands be upgraded.

Now the council is asking for feedback from residents for its plans, which includes new multi-purpose fitness, wellness and health facilities at Canterbury and redeveloping the pools.

“We want more than just facilities that people come to for a quick swim,” Mayor Khal Asfour said.

“That is why we are proposing facilities that a family can stay at all day.

“While we’d like to build a multi-purpose leisure facility in every suburb, it’s just not feasible or viable, so it’s important we locate our future services in appropriate locations.

“We now want to hear from residents again.

“We’ve listened to them on what they want, now we need them to provide their feedback on this proposed plan.”

The review of the leisure and aquatic centres by council-appointed specialist consultants Aecom indicated the current facilities do not meet community needs and are approaching the end of their viable life cycle.

The facilities were found to be over supplied, provide a lack of diversity and flexibility, are

financially inefficient and do not comply with current standards and legislation.

However, it was found Birrong Leisure and Aquatic Centre had high patronage, particularly among children through the learn to swim program.

Details: cb.city/haveyoursay and Council’s Bankstown and Campsie Customer Service Centres, with submissions closing on March 12.
