Canterbury Bankstown to be fully covered by NBN in 2020

The NBN is confident it can cover the whole of Canterbury Bankstown by mid-2020, saying more than 76,000 homes and premises can already access its broadband services.

The National Broadband Network can be accessed by more than half the homes and businesses in Canterbury Bankstown, and the authority in charge of NBN says the entire region will be covered by the middle of next year.

A spokeswoman for NBN Co said more than 76,000 homes and businesses in the Canterbury-Bankstown area can connect to the NBN access network now in parts of Bankstown, Canterbury, Campsie, Yagoona, Mount Lewis, Punchbowl, Wiley Park, Belmore and Lakemba.

The rest of Canterbury Bankstown — around 60,000 premises — should be able to progressively connect to NBN from September to mid-2020, according to the present timetable.

Construction will take place from now and into the new year in parts of Belmore, Padstow, Milperra, Panania, Revesby, East Hills and Chester Hill to connect the remaining 60,000 premises to the NBN network.

If they are not already connected, they can do so by ordering a service from their internet retail service provider.

“The best thing for residents to do is to use the Check Your Address function on the NBN website to see when their individual property will be eligible to order a retail service over the network,” an NBN Co spokeswoman said.

“If access is not yet available, people can register their email address and we will notify them when they become NBN ready.”

The current work has not been without problems, with an open telecom pit containing asbestos alarming residents in East Hills.

The NBN has apologised to East Hills residents. Panania residents have also raised concerns about being exposed to asbestos from the pits and claim NBN Co did not properly notify them of the work.

The NBN Co spokeswoman said more than 10 million homes and businesses can connect to the access network, including 1.2 million in Sydney.

“This major milestone comes with less than 12 months of the build remaining,” she said.

The company said they were also providing extra trips to ensure all residents and businesses can make the most of their service.

According to NBN Co research, although 87 per cent of NSW residents understand at least one factor that can impact their broadband experience (such as Wi-Fi quality and location in the home), just 4 in 10 (44 per cent) say they were very confident that their home set-up is optimised to deliver the best speed and performance.

Further, two thirds (69 per cent) said they managed their own internet set-up, while 1 in 4 (26 per cent) used their family and friends.

Ryan Williams, the acting head of NBN for NSW, said there were lots of factors that can affect the household broadband experience, such as Wi-Fi quality, modem placement and the number of devices connected.

SOME TIPS FROM NBN FOR SPEEDY SERVICE:

Amplify your connection: Thick walls are great at keeping noise out but do the same to your Wi-Fi signal. Consider purchasing a Wi-Fi repeater to amplify your signal and help get faster speeds throughout your house.

Your internet signal is weak: Check for objects that interfere with your Wi-Fi signal such as microwave ovens, televisions, hot water systems, ovens and even your fish tank. Place your Wi-Fi router/modem in a central location — free from obstructions.

Check your plan-: There are a range of speed plans NBN makes available to internet providers on the network, so chat to your retailer about your internet habits, the number of devices in the home and how many people will be online, particularly during the peak usage times between 7pm-9pm. It is important to contact your retailer in the first instance for anything related to the in-home experience.
