If you have not been brave enough to try camel burgers, give them a go at this year’s Ramadan Nights Lakemba, which begins on Sunday.

Camel burgers will be one of the more exotic meats to be savoured at this year’s Ramadan Nights Lakemba, with the creators of this exotic meal saying they are preparing to feed thousands of customers again.

The camel burgers first made its appearance 11 years when the owners of Broaster Chicken, Abdul Obeid and Adam Omar, decided to give this rare treat a go.

Little did they expect this to be a roaring success, with even Mr Obeid admitting it took them by surprise.

“It was a fluke. We were actually selling chicken, lamb and beef on the barbecue at the time, when a butcher came up and said we should sell camel, so we did,” Mr Obeid said.

“It is a long process and it tastes like beef but juicier.

“There are a lot of health benefits because it is a lean meat too.

“The first year we made and sold around 10kg of camel burgers but this time we expect to sell around 20 to 40kg each day.

“We source the camel meat from the Northern Territory.”

He said camel burgers are not very popular in many Arabic countries but has carved a niche for themselves at the hugely popular Ramadan night festival.

Mr Obeid said they were set to trade under the name of Ramadan Camel store at the at Haldon St, Lakemba.

“All the profits we have made from camel meat goes back into helping people in need,” Mr Obeid said.

“We choose a variety of different charities but the main one is Gathering for Good.”

“Another of our favourite items at these markets are the chicken fajitas which we have brought back.

“We expect to sell around 60kg of these each night.”

Camel Burger Has Humps to Overcome

Mayor Khal Asfour said the night festival starts on May 5 and ends on June 6, with plenty of food stalls and entertainment on the street for the thousands who attended each evening.

“There will be food vendors cooking up a storm on the footpaths, roving entertainment, an opportunity to take a photo with a camel and much, much more,” Mayor Asfour said.

“Everyone knows that Lakemba is the place to be to celebrate and experience Ramadan.

“Last year alone, we attracted more than 350,000 visitors and we’re expecting the same, if not more, this year.”

Road closures around Lakemba are proposed on Saturdays 11, 18 and 25 in May and Saturday June 1. There will also be a park and ride options for visitors, according to the council.

BID TO RAISE FEES FOR STALLHOLDERS

Meanwhile, Canterbury Bankstown Council will consider a recommendation to raise the fees for Lakemba Ramadan stallholders from $1000 to $1500 for those north of the rail line and $2250 for those south of the line to help cover part of the $300,000 costs.

Eleven of 18 public submissions opposed the fee increase.

The motion will be debated at the monthly council meeting on Tuesday, April 30, scheduled to start at 6pm at its Bankstown chambers.
