BY DAY Nathan Maroon works in marketing, but at night he switches the suit for spandex to become pro wrestler Vinnie Vain.
The 28-year-old Belmore wrestler joined the sport three years ago, and is gunning for the top.
He’ll have his chance to prove himself on home turf next month when he goes up against Psykotic as part of Australian Wrestling Entertainment’s Road to Redemption Tour.
Maroon said professional wrestling is about “showmanship” and “storytelling”.
“We’re here to entertain you,” he said.
Vinnie, he says, is an extension of his own character but “turned up times 100”, and with more fake tan and hair gel.
But while the moves might be orchestrated, the pain is not — as his spine will tell you.
“Everything we do, there’s injury and hurt. I recently shifted my L2 to L4 (spinal veterbrae) two millimetres,” he said.
“People think pro wrestling is fake and we don’t get injured but we put our bodies on the line and are constantly in some kind of pain.”
But why endure the pain?
Maroon says it’s about achieving his goals, and learning to, “pucker up buttercup”.
“I want to be the best,” he said.
“Until I climb to the top of the AWE all of my accomplishments don’t mean anything to me.”

Maroon has held the AWE tag team championship and is the first Mario Milano Contenders Cup champion.
He hopes to secure a tryout with World Wrestling Entertainment in the US.
See Vinnie Vain verse Psykotic at Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL on July 14.
The main event will feature former WWE cruiserweight champion Chavo Guerrero.
