A MAN on bail will face court today after he allegedly broke into Bankstown Fire Station and stole cash and phones from firefighters while they were putting their lives at risk to battle a house fire.
Last night, Fire and Rescue NSW were called to the Hume Highway in Yagoona just before 8pm after reports a house was alight.
But while they were responding to the job the Bankstown Fire Station was broken into just 300m down the road.
The intruders allegedly smashed a window to gain entry and broke into personal lockers, stealing cash, mobile phones and other personal items belonging to the firefighters.
Police were called when crews returned to the station and a trace of one of the stolen mobile phones led police to arrest two men, aged 29 and 38, at a Bass Hill hotel.
The two men were taken to Bankstown Police Station and this morning the 39-year-old was charged with break and enter, goods in custody, malicious damage and breach of bail.
He was refused bail and is due to appear at Bankstown Local Court today.
The 29-year-old man was released pending further inquiries.
A source, who wished not to be named told The Express it was a “low act”.
“We were out fighting a fire in Yagoona and while we were there the station was being broken into just 300m down the road,” the source said.
“It’s a low act.”
