Bankstown city could be more user friendly for pedestrians and cyclists under a radical draft plan to cover the next 20 years.

The sprawling city can be a challenge for both pedestrians and motorists and the Canterbury Bankstown Council is now keen to make the city more accessible and improve liveability.

Under its Draft Bankstown Complete Streets Transport and Place Plan, there will be more green spaces and trees and simplified bus routes.

The plan will be available for public exhibition and comment from Monday, May 6 to Monday, June 17.

A report summarising community feedback will then be presented to a future council meeting.

There are many aspects to this plan which aims to improve traffic to local businesses and

complete the ring road to provide better access to the edges of Bankstown.

The draft plan details pedestrian/cycle route, bike lanes, additional public spaces and shared zones, simplifying bus routes and more trees planted on streets.

According to Mayor Khal Asfour the plan will not only make Bankstown more accessible but sets out the vision, principles and strategies to guide the future growth of its transport system.

“This plan is part of our commitment to transform Bankstown’s CBD and improve liveability,” Mayor Asfour said.

“At the same time, we aim to make changes that will improve traffic to local businesses and create a greener destination where residents feel safe.

“This is all about creating better access for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike.

Residents can view the draft plan and see concepts and images for each street, via an interactive online map and 360-degree virtual reality scenes.

The council will host information sessions on the draft plan during the exhibition period.
