FORMER Royal Australian Air Force wing commander Lee de Winton knows a thing or two about leadership.
The recently appointed CEO of Bankstown Airport has 10 years of experience in senior positions with the RAAF, later becoming the head of Qantas freight operations, and a combined 20 years in corporate, defence and government organisations.
Ms de Winton will be a keynote speaker at the South West Bankstown Chamber of Commerce’s Women in Leadership event, to be held in Bankstown on August 21.
“Much has been made about me being the first female CEO of Bankstown and Camden airports,” Ms de Winton said.
“In reality I have been the first female in every one of my positions for the last 15 years so I really don’t know any different.”
“The roles I have had, however, have taken me to some amazing places including Iraq, Sudan and Afghanistan.
“These are some of the leadership experiences I will be speaking about on the evening.”
Chamber of commerce CEO Wally Mehanna said the night is about highlighting local women like Ms de Winton who are at the top of their game.
“We have a lot of women to be proud of (in Canterbury-Bankstown),” Mr Mehanna said.
“We want to showcase them and inspire others.”
He hopes the night will also send the message that in business, gender should not play a role.
“People need to be judged by their skills and what they bring to the table, that is what business is all about, gender should not be an issue,” Mr Mehanna said.
Ms de Winton will also discuss the airport, speaking about current and future opportunities for the region.
Women in Leadership will be held Bankstown Sports Club’s Grand Ballroom from 6.30pm. Tickets cost $35-$45 and include canapés and dinner.
