A southwest Sydney man has admitted his involvement in the supply of $70 million worth of ice after police uncovered a huge haul of the drug inside a piece of machinery sent from Mexico.
Ahmed Jarkas, 27, from Yagoona, was one of three men arrested early this year after 130kg of methamphetamine was discovered inside a one-tonne electromagnet sent in air cargo from Mexico to Sydney.
Jarkas has been in custody since his arrest and pleaded guilty on Thursday to one count of supply prohibited drug (large commercial quantity).
Rose Bay father Ahmed Sadi and his brother-in-law Moey Sadi have also been charged over their alleged involvement. Ahmed Sadi is yet to enter a plea while Moey Sadi has pleaded not guilty.
The agreed facts stated customs officers found disparities in the large piece of machinery in early January before police dismantled the electromagnet and seized the drugs.
Police then carried out a controlled delivery of the consignment to a business called Bremick Fasteners in Alexandria on January 13.
Co-accused Ahmed Sadi, who worked at Bremick as the national operations manager, allegedly received the machine.
The agreed facts stated Jarkas hired a truck near Bankstown Airport and drove to pick up the consignment on January 22, communicating with an unknown man for instructions.
After having trouble picking up the consignment, Ahmed Sadi allegedly became involved and Jarkas finally picked up the machine in the rental truck.
The agreed facts stated Jarkas drove the consignment to an address on Harley Cres in Condell Park where he left the machine. Jarkas is listed as the director of a window company which has a premises at the address.
He returned a few days later and used a forklift to move the machine inside a workshop.
“(Jarkas) placed a T-shirt onto a pole and used it to cover the CCTV camera inside the workshop,” the agreed facts stated.
Jarkas then used power tools to try and open the machine before moving it back outside and covering it again.
The machine remained at the site until police seized it on January 30, the same day Jarkas was arrested at his home in Yagoona. He asked police “what drugs?” while he was being arrested.
Jarkas will be sentenced in the NSW District Court in January.
Co-accused Ahmed Sadi and Moey Sadi were arrested about three weeks after Jarkas.
Ahmed Sadi, 47, who remains in custody, has been charged with take part large commercial prohibited drug supply and participate in criminal group contribute criminal activity.
Moey Sadi (also known as Muhanned Muhammed), 37, who has been released on bail, has been charged with participate in criminal group contribute criminal activity.
