THE historic Lakemba Hotel is set for an overhaul with a development company seeking to demolish and rebuild the iconic landmark.

The $9.8 million development by Iris Capital is a scaled back proposal to that which was first floated by the company in 2017 — a six-storey apartment block with 28 units and a ground floor pub.

That development was quashed last July when Iris Capital lost an appeal in the Land and Environment Court.

The design reportedly did not provide “good internal amenity through access to sunlight, natural ventilation and outlook”.

Iris Capital is now seeking to build 24 units at the Haldon St hotel site that would be part five, part six storeys.

The ground floor would have a pub, bottle shop and a gaming room.

Iris Capital are also redeveloping the historic Hursltone Park Hotel into the Wattle Hill apartment complex.

The development company owns a large portfolio of pubs and hotels, including Riverwood Hotel, the Palms Hotel in Chullora and the Wattle Hill apartment complex that will replace the historic Hurlstone Park Hotel.

The hotel opened in 1928 and was purchased by Iris Capital in October 2015.

In its heyday it was bought and run by Australian boxing great Vic Patrick after he retired from the ring in 1948.

The development proposal is on public exhibition until February 15 and can be viewed at Council’s Campsie Customer Service Centre or Riverwood Library and Knowledge Centre.
