Campsie will be home to a plush new hotel with 212 rooms if a $31 million development is approved.

The proposal for 10 London St, Campsie, will be built in a planned nine-storey building, which will also have four ground floor retailers, a restaurant and two levels of basement parking.

The plans for the Campsie’s biggest hotel come as Canterbury Bankstown Council prepare to accommodate an additional 140,000 residents by 2036 following State Government targets.

The planned south west Metro — due to be completed by 2024 despite opposition from several local organisations and residents — is also another reason developers are moving into the area.

The council is currently preparing a report on the development application lodged by Chinese-owned Australia Poly Holding on August 1.

The Sydney South Planning Panel has the final say for the project’s approval.

Canterbury Bankstown Chamber of Commerce CEO Wally Mehanna told The Express the new hotel and complex will be a boon for the community.

“This is terrific news because this is a clear indication that Campsie is an ideal destination for living, to study and to do business,” he said.

Mr Mehanna, who plans to drum up more business proposals in Campsie, said the strong mediterranean and Asian presence in the area gave the hotel’s developers a good clientele base.

“Knowing the metro is coming is also attracting additional investment and employment to the region and will assist local business, which will enhance the prosperity of the region.”

A long-time Campsie resident, who did not want to be named, said the hotel could be a better proposal than a multi-storey residential complex.

“Actually having a hotel is not a bad idea compared to a block of units,” the local said.

“There is a lot of rubbish dumped outside the unit blocks which is very unhealthy, whereas the hotel will ensure the place is kept clean and tidy for business.

“The planned metro is also being seen as an opportunity to make money by developers because of the rezoning by the government to make it easier to build mixed-use complexes.”

The proposal will initially be assessed by the council and then sent to the Sydney South West Planning Panel for determination.

Councillor Clare Raffan said: “I understand the council’s planning experts are currently assessing the application.

“Once that process is completed, the matter will go to the Sydney South Planning Panel, not council, due to the capital investment value of the project being greater than $30 million, for determination.”

Australia Poly Holding is an international property developer based in Melbourne handling residential property developments, commercial property developments, service apartment and hotels.

The present building, which is currently a Asian mini-market, will be demolished if the proposal is approved.
