You’ve had doughnuts, you’ve heard of cronuts, now make way for domuts – doughnuts for dogs.
They are the brainchild of 11-year-old Marcus who came up with the idea after his parents told him if he wanted a dog, he had to save up for one.
Every Sunday morning at 5.30am the young entrepreneur from Kingsgrove wakes up to bake about 70 domuts, which have been selling like hot cakes at the Canterbury Foodies and Farmers Markets at Canterbury Park Racecourse.
His light-bulb moment came when helping his parents set up their bakery stall one weekend.
“We were just setting up for the Sunday market and I asked if dogs could have a doughnut, mum said no because they can’t have sugar and chocolate and things like that,” Marcus said.
“So then I went home and researched what dogs can and can’t eat and then mum said ‘why don’t you make some?’ So I got all the ingredients out and made a batch.”
Marcus came up with a doughnut made of oats, eggs and stock as the base ingredients.
His creations include chicken liver and beef with peanut butter or cream cheese, and carob and chicken liver.
Every week the business has grown and soon Marcus will have enough to be able to buy his dream dog – an Airedale which will be named Bruce.
In fact, the business has become so profitable he is now looking to donate to a local animal shelter.
“Even if we make enough for a dog, we’ll keep going and putting funds towards shelters,” Marcus said.
He hopes to keep expanding the business and has plans for online orders and deliveries.
