Crew on the northern beaches yacht Showtime were forced to abandon ship and take to a liferaft off the NSW coast after a drama at sea saw their keel reportedly break off and the yacht overturn.
Her crew were all reported safe and well after the incident.
The drama was one of three involving yachts from the 2019 race returning to Sydney in the wake of the 75th anniversary bluewater classic.
Showtime, the 40-footer owned by Newport’s Mark Griffith and based out of the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club at Pittwater, was one of the pre-race favourites for the overall win in the famous race.
According to a Facebook post by Marine Rescue NSW, her delivery crew issued a Mayday call at 2.35am south of Narooma, took to liferafts and are now reportedly safely back on land after being rescued by a police boat sent out from Port Kembla.
The yacht, which has not been found, is a navigational hazard.
Also running into strife was the army boat Gun Runner, based out of RANSA at Rushcutters Bay which was dismasted.
This yacht was able to motor to shore with her crew all safe.
Secret Men’s Business reportedly had two injured crew but advised it did not require further assistance.
