The son of NRL legend Wendell Sailor has faced court for the first time since he was charged over what police allege was a “predatory and planned” attack in which a woman was drugged and raped.
Stalled NRL player Tristan Sailor, 22, was arrested and charged with aggravated sexual assault in October after what police allege was a chilling and non-consensual encounter with a drugged woman at a Wolli Creek home.
At his bail application at Wollongong Local Court, police prosecutor Sergeant Shannon Ryan said the 24-year-old female complainant was found “discarded and unresponsive by a friend” after meeting Sailor at the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi then returning to the Wolli Creek home.
Police allege the woman was given the sedative Doxylamine without her knowledge and she remembers nothing after she arrived at the home with Sailor and a friend.
Sailor’s parents accompanied him to Sutherland Local Court where he appeared briefly before Magistrate Joy Boulos.
His solicitor Ramy Qutami requested an eight-week adjournment for the rest of the brief to be served and the matter will return to court on January 28 next year.
Mr Qutami also sought and was granted a bail variation for Sailor to report to police three times a week instead of five, and a variation of his curfew to apply from 10pm to 5am instead of 7.30pm to 5.30am.
At his bail application in October the court heard the complainant texted Sailor the next day to ask “what happened last night”.
Sailor allegedly texted back “We were playing drinking games and yes we did have sex. I asked you and (your friend) so everything was sweet.”
Sailor’s defence lawyer at the time, Richard Pontello SC, said the texts in fact reflected Sailor’s version of events that the alleged encounter was consensual.
Sailor said nothing as he departed the court precinct with his family and lawyer.
