A teenager who discovered a stray bag of party drugs on a Sydney beach was charged with drug possession after he forgot to throw them out and lost his wallet, which wound up in the hands of police.

Cooper Robbins, 19, told police he stumbled on a plastic bag printed with smiley faces containing five white and green MDMA pills while walking on Cronulla Beach on March 30.

He pleaded guilty to prohibited drug possession at Sutherland Local Court and was sentenced to a 12-month conditional release order without conviction.

“The accused was walking along near Cronulla train station when he dropped his wallet on the ground,” agreed police facts stated.

“The wallet was found by an elderly member of the public and handed in to the police.”

Police then searched Robbins’ wallet, which contained several forms of photo identification and the ziplock bag of caps, before calling the Cronulla man to come and collect his wallet.

“When (Robbins) arrived at the front counter, police asked ‘what are the pills inside’,” the facts stated.

“The accused said ‘MDMA’.”

Robbins admitted he had used MDMA before in a different form but he had intended to throw the caps away after previously having a bad experience with the drug.

Robbins’ solicitor told Magistrate Michael Connell her client was an apprentice plumber who intended to start his own business and was also planning to travel to Thailand for his brother’s 21st birthday.
