More than 20 jaywalkers copped a double-digit fine in Sydney’s south yesterday after a road safety crackdown by local police.
Sutherland Shire police officers fined 22 pedestrians $75 each for jaywalking on the Kingsway at Westfield Miranda and at Cronulla Mall between midday and 6pm on November 27.
An additional 10 people were cautioned, while three pushbike riders were fined for not wearing helmets.
Five drivers were fined for using their mobile phones while driving, while one was fined for not wearing a seatbelt and another was fined for speeding.
Traffic and Highway Patrol’s Inspector Phil Brooks said 328 people have died on NSW roads this year.
“Sixty of those deaths have been pedestrians,” Insp Brooks said.
“This is an increase of eight deaths from the same time in the previous year.”
Insp Brooks said similar jaywalking crackdowns could occur anywhere anytime in other local accident hot spots across Sydney’s south.
Just hours after officers began the pedestrian safety operation an elderly women was left with critical head and spinal injuries after she was hit by a car in Sylvania.
At 4.45pm a 19-year-old man was travelling south on Port Hacking Rd when he allegedly struck the woman at the intersection of Melrose Ave.
The driver was arrested and charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm and negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm after undergoing mandatory testing in hospital.
His licence was suspended and he will face Sutherland Local Court on December 13.
The 77-year-old woman remains at St George Hospital in a critical condition.
