Guang Yu ‘Kenny’ Wang, Wolli Creek: Jarryd Miller, Piyabut Panya charged after man allegedly shot in face

Two men who allegedly ransacked a Sydney unit, threatened a group of people playing cards, before pistol-whipping a man and shooting another in the face have been arrested, two weeks after the violent ordeal.

Two men charged over alleged home invasion in Sydney's south

Police say two men who were injured - one shot in the face and one pistol-whipped - should buy lotto tickets after surviving a terrifying home invasion at a Wolli Creek unit where they were playing Saturday night cards with friends.

The pair were seriously injured when two men, in their 20s, allegedly armed with a gun threatened the group when they stormed the unit just after 9pm on June 13.

Police say 35-year-old Guang Yu ‘Kenny’ Wang was shot when he came to the aid of a man in his late 20s who was pistol-whipped and knocked out cold.

According to police, two intruders stole mobile phones, personal items and cash before fleeing in a silver hatchback.

The injured man was taken to St George Hospital, where he underwent surgery and has been released.

Robbery and Serious Crime Squad commander Grant Taylor said Wang was released from hospital on Thursday after a lucky escape.

“It’s quite amazing,’’ he said.

“He was hit in the jaw area and he lost a number of teeth and significant damage to the structure of his face. If he had been shot a centimetre or two in any other direction, I’d say he would not be alive today.”

Det-Supt Taylor said the alleged victims remained traumatised.

“Even the individual who was pistol-whipped was rendered unconscious,’’ he said.

“It’s very easy to cause a significant head wound that can cause life-threatening injuries so he’s very lucky and ... the individual who was shot was an extremely lucky individual so they might be best to buy some lotto tickets.’’

Detectives are still investigating if the men charged had a relationship with the alleged victims.

“We’re trying to establish, to put together the pieces of the puzzle, just how these individuals come to know that those people were there that night playing cards and that money was going to be on the premises, that’s part of the investigation,’’ Det-Supt Taylor said.

St George Police and detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad have started an investigation under Strike Force Blyth and raided three homes at Pemulwuy, Homebush West and Fairfield on Wednesday at 6am.

Two men – aged 23 and 24 – were arrested and charged.

Jarryd Miller appeared at Fairfield Local Court today via video link, where an application for his release on bail was abandoned because his defence team was yet to receive outstanding material from police.

The 24-year-old from Pemulwuy has been charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon cause wounding/grievous bodily harm.

According to court documents, police allege Mr Miller robbed the occupants of $10,000 and “at the time of did inflict grievous bodily harm” on one man “whilst being then armed with an offensive weapon, to wit, firearm”.

Magistrate Theo Tsavdaridis adjourned the matter to Thursday, July 2 for a bail application at Burwood Local Court.
