A hardworking dad spent his 40th birthday in court after blowing his good behaviour licence while speeding during double demerits.
A court heard Shannon Boyce, 40, was already on thin ice after a string of speeding offences and using his mobile phone while driving resulted in him getting a good behaviour licence.
Police then caught the Cronulla man speeding at 124km/h in a 100km/h zone over the Christmas double demerit period.
His solicitor told Magistrate Les Mabbutt at Sutherland Local Court that Boyce relied on his licence for his employment as a plumber.
“Double demerits are well publicised over the Christmas period, and there’s a reason why there are double demerits at that time,” Mr Mabbutt told Boyce.
“Prior to that you made two other decisions to speed, and use a mobile phone - you were given a choice to take a good behaviour licence for 12 months, and then you were caught speeding.”
Boyce was convicted and fined $300 after pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity.
Whether he retains his licence is now a matter for the Roads and Maritime Service.
“I take no pleasure in people losing their licences but you simply haven’t looked after your licence,” Mr Mabbutt told Boyce.
“People on good behaviour licences know the risk they are taking, and unfortunately like many people your record is getting a little bit worse as you’re getting older.”
