A university IT worker and board game enthusiast who was jailed twice for sexually assaulting children and then for disseminating child abuse material has now breached his obligations as a registered sex offender for a third time.

Sep Mirto, 54, was jailed for two-and-a-half years in April 2009 after he was convicted of five counts of sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old and three counts of aggravated sexual intercourse with children younger than 14 at Sydney District Court.

He received another seven months and two weeks behind bars at Parramatta Local Court in June 2012 for two counts of disseminating child abuse material.

The Hurstville man was hauled back to Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday after breaching his obligations as a registered child sex offender for the third time since he was placed on the register for 15 years in 2013.

Mirto, who now works as a facilities and technical officer in the Faculty of Science at the University of Technology Sydney, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with his reporting obligations after he neglected to alert police in time when he moved house.

“On August 16, the accused sent a detective an email advising that he had changed address and asked for an appointment to sign the paperwork,” agreed police facts state.

“Police made inquiries through the leasing agent and were informed the lease was signed on August 10 by the accused.”

The court heard Sirto had made an earnest attempt to uphold his obligations about address changes but should not have signed the lease until after he had spoken to police.

Magistrate Philip Stewart convicted Sirto and sentenced him to a 12-month community corrections order with supervision after hearing he was still serving a prior two-year community corrections order for two previous breaches of his reporting obligations.

In 2018 Sirto was charged with two counts of failing to comply with his reporting obligations after he failed to inform police he was frequently sleeping over at his then-girlfriend’s house in a nearby suburb and had occasional contact with her grandchildren.

That order was due to expire in November this year, but with the additional community corrections order Sirto will remain under supervision until September 2021.
