A private schoolboy and former representative rugby player who knocked a man unconscious outside a notorious Sydney nightclub has narrowly avoided jail despite his involvement in another pub brawl only weeks later.

A court heard Sam Schriek, 18, punched a clubgoer he had argued with inside Cronulla nightclub Fusion, only weeks after he graduated from prestigious Campbelltown boarding school St Gregory’s College.

The sudden blow to the head knocked the young man out for two minutes when the group was ejected from the club and the fight turned violent just past midnight on December 22.

“Another argument took place between the groups, and Schriek and the victim began to push each other when Schriek has punched the victim to the side of the head,” police facts stated.

“The punch caused the victim to fall to the ground, and Schriek has proceeded to kick the victim in the upper body an unknown number of times.”

Schriek and the victim’s friend then began punching each other as the victim lay bleeding on the ground until police arrived to intervene.

At Sutherland Local Court Magistrate Holly Kemp slammed the teen’s alarmingly reckless behaviour on the boozy night out.

“One punch with the force that was used could have forced the victim back into a harder surface and the consequences could have been much worse,” Ms Kemp said.

“This alcohol-fuelled violence is not tolerable in the community.”

Schriek pleaded guilty to affray and was sentenced to a one-year prison term to be served in the community as an intensive corrections order after the court heard he was charged with affray a second time only weeks after the initial brawl when he was on bail.

Police facts reveal Schriek and an underage friend were drinking in a gaming room at Coopers Hotel in Newtown when they were set upon by another group of men.

One of the men slapped Schriek’s underage companion three times before Schriek threw a punch at the aggressor and fled the venue.

“The accused said ‘I freaked out and wanted to protect my friend’,” police facts stated.

“At the time of committing the offence before the court, Schriek was on bail conditions that included not to be intoxicated in a public place.”

Schriek also pleaded guilty to affray over the second offence and was sentenced to a one-year community corrections order including supervision.

“You’re a young man of 18 years, with the world ahead of you,” Ms Kemp told the former representative rugby league player.

“This is the last place you want to be.”

The court heard Schriek had been re-entering his social life after a serious jetski accident left him severely injured and requiring 16 surgeries.
