The probationary constable in his 30s was returning in his private car to Liverpool police station after a training exercise when it is understood a woman veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided with his vehicle on Heathcote Rd near Lucas Heights just after 2pm.
The man was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition and is now in an induced coma.
The woman in the other vehicle was trapped for 40 minutes before she was also taken to Liverpool Hospital in a serious condition and placed in an induced coma.
Liverpool City police Superintendent Adam Whyte is at Liverpool Hospital supporting the young officer.
Evening peak traffic is painfully heavy as Heathcote Rd remains closed in both directions between New Illawarra Rd at Lucas Heights and Macarthur Dr at Holsworthy.
Drivers have been redirected to the M5 Motorway, Davies Rd, Alfords Point Rd and New Illawarra Rd while police continue to examine the crash scene.
Residents of small suburbs off Heathcote Rd including Sandy Point, Voyager Point and Pleasure Point have been permitted to pass roadblocks at Holsworthy so they can return home this evening.
The 901, 902, 903 and M90 bus routes have been delayed up to 25 minutes due to the heavy traffic around the scene.
Parents reported on Facebook that children travelling home from Lucas Heights Community School by bus to Sydney’s southwest were also delayed due to the crash investigation.
More to come.
