Jay Furniss says he’s been learning valuable lessons coaching nippers at Cronulla and they are lessons he hope will see him finally crack a win on the Nutri-Grain ironman series.
Furniss is about to compete in his fifth professional series but has higher aspirations than normal in 2020/21.
The primary school teacher from the Sutherland Shire finished eighth overall in 2018 with his best result a third in round six of the 2019 series at North Cronulla
“I want to requalify (for the series) but I want a round win as well,’’ Furniss said in the lead-up to Saturday and Sunday’s racing at Kingscliff.
“I’ve never had one before. I was close last year in round six though.
“Being at a new club has reignited the spark a bit. Having a leadership role at the club as the Nippers coach has made me more accountable with my own training.
“I want to lead by example. I want the kids to see what they can be.”
Furniss has moved back to the Sutherland Shire from the northern beaches and has taken up the role of Head Nippers coach at Cronulla surf club.
He also has a new role at Rockdale Public school in 2021.
After this weekend’s opening rounds, the series will play out at Wanda on January 16-17 with the finale on February 13-14 at Kurrawa.
All rounds will be broadcast live on Channel 9 from 12pm-2pm (AEDT) with a total of $200,000 on offer for athletes.
The inaugural Nutri-Grain Next-Gen Series, for athletes aged under 17 and under 19 will run as a curtain raiser event.
