An alleged disqualified driver has been charged after a fatal three-car smash in Sydney’s south just days into the new year.

A 63-year-old Heathcote man tragically died at the scene after his red Subaru collided with a silver Toyota Hilux driven by a 26-year-old Miranda man on New Illawarra Rd in Lucas Heights at 2.30pm on January 5.

The Hilux driver has now been charged with dangerous driving causing death, driving disqualified, illegally using a vehicle and breaching his bail conditions.

Following an investigation assisted by the Crash Investigation Unit, Sutherland Shire police arrested the man at 11am on January 12 and took him to Kogarah police station, where he was refused bail to face Parramatta Local Court today.

The Hilux driver suffered abdominal and spinal injuries in the crash, while his 21-year-old male passenger from Cronulla was treated at Liverpool Hospital for minor abdominal injuries.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
