A cyclist was left with a “swollen and deformed” broken leg after a P-plater distracted by her car radio ran him down in Sydney’s south last year.

Keely Lanham, 20, was changing the radio station in her Jeep when she noticed traffic moving around her on the Princes Hwy at Gymea on April 14 last year.

“Whilst still looking at the radio and without looking up, the accused started to drive forward,” the agreed police facts stated.

“The accused felt a bump and saw the victim and his bike go under the front of her car.”

Lanham then ran over the stricken cyclist with her rear driver’s side wheels in an attempt to avoid hitting him again.

Sutherland Local Court Magistrate Michael Connell convicted Lanham of negligent driving after a charge of negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm was withdrawn.

Lanham also lost her licence for 12 months and was fined $750.

“I accept that the injuries were serious,” Mr Connell said.

Lanham stopped at the scene and apologised after the male cyclist said she “ran him over”.

Members of the public rendered first aid before the cyclist underwent surgery at St George Hospital to repair the proximal tibial plateau fracture to his left leg.

“The victim has had a number of screw and supporting plates inserted to aid in the repair of the injury,” the agreed police facts stated.

Lanham’s solicitor Mr Walsh said the CrossFit and corporate gym trainer had her whole life ahead of her and argued she deserved mercy.

“Sadly the man has suffered a serious injury but it was in a moment of inattention,” Mr Walsh told the court.

“She’s extremely sorry for that she’s done and she’s beyond embarrassment.”
