A spurned lover threatened to saw his ex-partner’s boyfriend in half with a chainsaw as he chased him through a suburban Sydney shopping centre, police will allege.

Jason Cooney, 47, refused to stand for Magistrate Clare Farnan at Sutherland Local Court after she ignored his pleas for mercy from the dock following his arrest in Kingsgrove last night.

Police allege Cooney had a violent argument with his former partner at a Rayment Ave home early on Tuesday morning, leaving her with facial injuries.

Cooney allegedly chased another man through Kingsgrove with a chainsaw.

By 5pm on Wednesday, police allege claim Cooney had tracked his former partner to a Kingsgrove Rd home and began arguing with the 48-year-old male resident she was visiting.

Cooney then allegedly chased the older man through the Kingsgrove shopping centre, threatening to saw him in half with the chainsaw.

“Mr Cooney is currently on parole and these offences carry significant prison sentences if found proven,” Ms Farnan said.

“He may have health problems and an available rehab place but these are factors which cannot overcome the (bail) requirements.”

Cooney shouted out and kicked the dock in rage after telling Ms Farnan he had already been to prison.

“Isn’t there any way I can get out on bail?” Cooney pleaded.

“I’ve done my time in custody, three years and three months - so much for getting rehab.”

Cooney’s Legal Aid solicitor Christina Vassiliou told the court the Hurstville man was medicated with antidepressants and was scheduled to begin rehabilitation at a Canterbury facility in February.

“He lives with his mother, who can put up a $10,000 surety,” Ms Vassiliou said.

“She has advised she has a variety of health issues and he assists her with the care of those.”

Cooney, who works as a groundsman, was already before the court in relation to domestic violence orders and charges of driving with illicit drugs in his system.

He described himself on Facebook as “a cool, calm and collective guy with a good heart”.

He will return to court via audiovisual link on February 11.
