‘I had it two weeks ago’: Helensburgh drug driver in court for repeat offending

A drug user was rolling in his Holden Commodore station wagon when police took exception to the shade of his window tints. But the opaqueness of his glassware was the least of his trouble when he appeared in court on Thursday.

A man was caught driving with meth in his system after having been pulled over by police because the tints on his Holden Commodore were too dark.

Dale Thomas Blackwell, 26, from a well-known family in Helensburgh just south of Sydney, was stopped by police while driving through Heathcote during the afternoon of Saturday, August 17.

Police stopped him because the tints on his Holden Commodore station wagon were too dark.

He underwent a roadside breath test which returned a negative result.

However, he also underwent an oral fluid test which returned a positive result for methamphetamine.

The agreed facts stated he was arrested and told police “I had it two weeks ago”.

Further tests were taken and confirmed he was driving with methamphetamine in his system.

Mr Blackwell was given a vehicle defect notice, because of his tints, and charged with drive vehicle with illicit drug present in blood (second offence).

He will be sentenced in January.
He will be sentenced in January.

He appeared in Sutherland Local Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to the charge.

The matter has been adjourned until January 23 for sentence after he completes a traffic offender program.

Mr Blackwell was also in court in April this year facing another charge of drive vehicle with illicit drug present in blood. He was sentenced to a conditional release order for 12 months on that occasion.
