Nicholas Mendez: Alleged Hurstville fatal crash driver in court

A driver who allegedly killed an elderly woman in a Hurstville crash has pleaded with a court to be allowed to  have his licence back.

UPDATE

 A driver charged over an elderly woman's death in a fatal pedestrian crash in Sydney's south wants his licence suspension lifted and his bail varied so he can drive again.

Nicholas Mendez, 28, was charged with dangerous driving causing death, negligent driving causing death and not reversing a vehicle safely after police allege he hit a 68-year-old Padstow woman with his car as she crossed Rose St in Hurstville on January 14.

He is yet to enter a plea to the charges but will apply to have his police licence suspension lifted and his bail conditions varied so he can drive while the matter remains before the court.

Mendez appeared at Sutherland Local Court on Monday where both applications were set to proceed until his barrister Nic Angelov had both matters adjourned to March 8 to gather more documentation.

An elderly woman is dead and a young man has been charged after a tragic fatal crash in Sydney’s south.

Emergency services rushed to Rose St in Hurstville just before 10.30am on Thursday following reports a woman had been hit by a 4WD.

The 68-year-old Padstow woman died at the scene despite desperate efforts to administer first aid.

The 28-year-old male driver was uninjured and was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

He was subsequently arrested at Kogarah police station and charged with dangerous driving causing death, negligent driving causing death and not reversing a vehicle safely.

He was granted bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court for the first time on February 2.

St George Police Area Command officers established a crime scene after the incident before the Crash Investigation Unit investigated the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
