A man allegedly sprayed a rookie cop with his own pepper spray after tipping a beer on a female pub patron and smashing a glass over a man’s head at a Riverwood hotel.

A good Samaritan helped contain Corey Perceval, 24, after he allegedly attacked the probationary constable who came to arrest him at Riverwood Hotel at 5pm on Sunday.

Police will allege Perceval poured a beer on a woman and smashed a glass over a man’s head in a confrontation about 11.45pm the previous day, before he returned to the venue the next day.

St George police attended the venue before Perceval spotted them and allegedly fled the hotel.

The male probationary constable stopped him in the hotel’s rear carpark after a short foot chase before Perceval allegedly removed the officer’s OC spray from his vest and deployed it towards him.

The officer was decontaminated and did not require medical treatment.

Perceval has now been charged with common assault, assault causing actual bodily harm, resisting arrest, assaulting police, using a prohibited weapon, using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, two counts of breaching an apprehended domestic violence order and breaching bail.

Magistrate Peter Bugden refused his bail at Sutherland Local Court on Monday as it emerged Perceval was already before the court charged with four alleged domestic and personal violence offences which occurred only two weeks beforehand.

On August 19 Perceval was also charged with two counts of common assault against the same woman in Riverwood, stalking and intimidating her, and stalking and intimidating a second woman.

He will return to Sutherland Local Court via audiovisual link later this month.
