A community is grieving a beloved Sydney high school teacher after his sudden and tragic death during an indoor soccer match.
Shire Christian School in Barden Ridge in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire posted a brief statement about secondary school head Greg Smith, who suffered a cardiac arrest on November 17.
Mr Smith suffered the sudden attack while playing indoor soccer with Bangor FC.
“Please pray for all those who knew Greg, particularly Greg’s wife Nicole, and their two boys during this difficult time as they are supported by their school and church communities,” the school wrote.
“Our staff and families are continuing to receive ongoing support from our psychologists and pastoral care staff.”
The school said students and teachers alike had been greatly blessed by Mr Smith’s servant-hearted leadership.
“Greg was a much loved and integral part of our school, and a respected leader who loved Jesus,” the school wrote.
“His loss will be deeply felt by many.”
Mr Smith’s brother Stephen also offered a tribute, saying he had always been there for him.
“When he laughed his whole body joined in,” he wrote.
“He was a rock for me throughout my life.”
Stephen Smith also thanked Mr Smith’s friends for their efforts when he became ill during the soccer match.
“Please know the family is so thankful for attempting to revive our Greg,” he wrote.
“You guys did everything you could – he died doing something he loved.”
Bangor FC members also wrote a tribute to Mr Smith, expressing their shock and sadness.
“Greg was a player, former committee member, coach, friend, loving husband to Nicole and a doting father to Ethan and Liam who play in our 12C and 13A teams.
“Greg was a prominent figure in our community, teaching at both Inaburra and Shire Christian schools.
“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Bangor FC are with Nicole, Ethan and Liam today.”
