A notoriously accident-prone major road in Sydney’s south will receive a massive cash injection worth almost $100m in the Federal Budget for safety improvements.

Heathcote Rd from Hammondville to Voyager Point will receive a whopping $94m from the Federal Government to facilitate upgrades on the infamously dangerous stretch of road.

The Federal Government previously committed $2.2m to upgrade the intersection at Heathcote Rd, Walder Rd and Bardia Pde in Holsworthy.

Deputy Prime Minister and infrastructure minister Michael McCormack and urban infrastructure minister Alan Tudge made a joint statement to announce the massive multibillion-dollar investment in priority road and rail projects across NSW in 2020 to 2021.

“The Government will provide $2.7 billion from 2020-21 for priority road and rail projects in New South Wales to support economic recovery and jobs,” they stated.

“(That will increase) the Government’s total commitment to transport infrastructure in NSW to over $39.0 billion.”

The notorious stretch of road from Sydney’s Sutherland Shire to Liverpool City has tragically claimed many lives in recent years.

In October 2019 beloved Sydney school teacher and father of four Pete Hazlewood, 40, died when his Mazda 2 collided with an Audi Q3 on Heathcote Rd.

In January 2019 Liverpool police officer Constable Timothy Proctor, 29, was tragically killed in a head-on crash on Heathcote Rd as he left a training facility in the area.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison previously said the shovel-ready projects, which include the Heathcote Rd upgrade, would create more than 8000 jobs across NSW and kickstart NSW’s beleaguered economy on the back of the COVID-19 pandemic,

“We have been working closely with state and territory governments to invest in the infrastructure that is ready to go and can help rebuild our economy and create more jobs,” he said.

“These projects will keep commuters safe on the road, get people home to their loved ones sooner and provide better transport links for urban and regional communities.”

Mr Morrison said the government’s investment in infrastructure in NSW totalled $5bn since the pandemic.

“This latest investment will provide another boost to the local economy and is part of our plan to support an estimated 8000 direct and indirect jobs across the state,” he said.

Mr McCormack and Mr Tudge said the Federal Government would also invest $5.5m in a National Road Safety Data Hub to assess the effectiveness of road safety efforts in the pursuit of zero fatalities and serious injuries on Australian roads by 2050.
