MORE than 10,000 new residents could be shuttled into Sydenham station daily if a massive new Arncliffe development goes ahead.
Bayside Council Planning Panel is currently considering an application by Cook Cove Inlet Pty Ltd’s for 5364 new homes, including 25-storey apartment towers and three-bedroom townhouses at Cook Cove on the shores of the Cook River.
Under the significant proposal, Cook Cove residents would take an exclusive rail feeder bus to Sydenham station to distribute public transport passengers away from Wolli Creek — which is a 15-minute walk away, but is swiftly approaching capacity.
Transport for NSW will monitor the significant application and make a submission to Bayside Council if necessary.
“We’re aware there has been a surge in demand on the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line over the last few years, particularly at busy stations like Wolli Creek, Rockdale and Hurstville,” a spokesman said.
“This is why we are prioritising capacity improvements for the train lines that serve these busy stations.”
The developer suggested Sydenham’s planned high-frequency Sydney Metro service was better-equipped to handle the residential influx.
Rockdale state Labor MP Steve Kamper said the State Government had a responsibility to ensure public transport access ahead of the potential Cook Cove development.
“The reality is if there’s going to be any major development at Cooks Cove the State Government needs to make sure there’s a high level of public transport service,” Mr Kamper said.
“The Illawarra line’s already overcrowded, we either need a major rail upgrade [on the Illawarra line] or we need a dedicated bus route to Sydenham.”

Transport for NSW will invest more than $880 million to explore improvements such as increased peak hour services in Sydney’s south.
“This includes an increase of up to five more trains per hour during the morning peak hour services on the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line as well as additional services for South Coast customers, which is an increase of up to 30 per cent more services,” the spokesman said.
“We’ll continue to review customer feedback through Opal data and customer insights captured to help identify where customers need improvements to their train services the most.”
