A seasoned thief has learned people who play with fire get burnt after stealing a NSW firey’s uniform and a key that gives access to every metropolitan fire station in Sydney.

Adam De Maria, 34, broke into a NSW Fire and Rescue Ford Ranger at Gymea on Sunday and stole a firefighter’s uniform, his NSW Fire and Rescue and Rural Fire Service identification cards, and a set of three bi-lock keys that permit access to every Fire and Rescue station in the metropolitan area.

Hours later he also took an ornamental wooden tai chi sword in a fabric sheath, a mirror with a white frame and a fabric shopping bag along with other unknown items from storage cages at a Gymea unit block’s underground car park.

Magistrate Jayeann Carney told Sutherland Local Court that De Maria, who has a lengthy and violent criminal history, had made full admissions to the offences.

“The larceny is extremely serious and he admits that he has stolen the types of ID and the keys to the fire stations,” Ms Carney told the court.

De Maria’s girlfriend Sylvia Benafante, 37, was allegedly seen on CCTV with De Maria at the Gymea unit block.
