POLICE are investigating if an extortion attempt was behind the daylight shooting of 31-year-old Tony Maaz just moments after he ordered a pizza in Sydney’s south west.
Mr Maaz ordered a meat and cheese pizza from Yum Yum Traditional Lebanese Pizza on King Georges Rd just after 11am today when police believe he got into an argument with another man outside.
The two left in a dark Nissan Dualis.
A few minutes later Mr Maaz was shot in Hampden Rd a few hundred metres away.
He was rushed to St George Hospital with a bullet wound to his thigh and was in a critical condition.
Mr Maaz’s white Range Rover was seized by police — with the keys inside it — from outside the pizza shop.
The gunman remained on the run last night and police were investigating whether the conflict was over money or a possible extortion attempt.
Police said they were looking for a man of Middle Eastern appearance with a solid build.
“He just ordered the pizza and left, it’s still here … He never came back to get it,” pizza shop owner Sam said.
“He’s not a regular but he’s been in here a lot.
“It’s devastating. The first thing I saw was a cop, then all I could hear were sirens and it was on.”
Police were scanning CCTV from the shop last night for any clues as to what sparked the argument.
Police helicopters were circling overhead and the Dog Unit attended the scene as residents gathered outside the street.
