A man who impulsively rubbed cocaine on his teeth on a night out at the pub with mates has been caught drug driving four days later.

Ali Kazan, 21, said he usually “never touched the stuff” as he pleaded guilty to drug driving a second time at Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday.

“The officer told me I was driving with amphetamines in my system and I said that isn’t possible, I don’t do drugs and this and that,” Kazan told Magistrate Peter Bugden.

“I thought back four days ago, I put it on my teeth, and she (the officer) was like, you’re an idiot.”

Mr Bugden disqualified the Bexley construction worker from driving for eight months and fined him $1000.

Kazan was previously convicted of drug driving at Waverley Local Court in November 2017, fined $500 and disqualified for six months.

Kazan said he needed his licence for his job in construction.

“You go down to the pub and you drink 10 beers, normal strength beers, and the experts can work out when it’s gone out of your system,” Mr Bugden told the court.

“You can drink five schooners, and 10 hours later you wouldn’t have one bit of alcohol left in your system — but it’s not the same for drugs.”

Mr Bugden said NSW courts often saw people who had not used illicit substances for several days charged with drug driving.

“It’s still in your bloodstream,” Mr Bugden said.

“Ecstasy, ice, cocaine, cannabis — you can use it in different ways but it stays there, I’ve heard of someone being charged after 12 days.”

Kazan was supported by his cousins in court.

“My mates do cocaine, I don’t touch it, alright?” Kazan said.

“But out of stupidity I dabbed it on my teeth.”

Mr Bugden said the length of time drugs could affect drivers was unpredictable.

“When you get as old as I am it takes longer to leave your system,” Mr Bugden said.

“The rules go out the door for women, I don’t why — but that’s the risk that you take.”

Mr Bugden reminded Kazan not to drive home from court.

“Some people come here and park out the front (before they are disqualified,” Mr Bugden said.

“The police can just wait out the front for them.”
