A domestic violence offender has been labelled a “threat to women’s safety” in court after he continually tormented a woman over a year-long period.
Camilo Andres Grimaldos Chaparro, 26, was sentenced to an intensive correction order at Sutherland Local Court on Thursday after being found guilty of multiple domestic violence offences.
The Wolli Creek man faced a hearing in May after pleading not guilty to two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, common assault, and choking.
Documents tendered in court state the common assault offence occurred at Mascot in the second half of 2022.
Chaparro, the court heard, committed two offences of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against the same woman in October 2022 at Botany and August 2023 at Wolli Creek.
The final offence of intentionally choking took place in May last year at Wolli Creek.
In court on Thursday, Magistrate Jayeann Carney said when handing down the sentence: “I find you to be a domestic violence perpetrator.”
“Women in the community are at risk due to your attitudes and behaviour,” she said.
Ms Carney sentenced Chaparro to an 18-month ICO as well as a three-year community correction order.
The magistrate emphasised the ICO was a jail sentence, pointing to Chaparro and warning: “Breach this and you will go to jail.”
Chaparro was also ordered to complete 200 hours of community service work while under the supervision of Community Corrections at Bankstown.
An apprehended domestic violence order was put in place for a period of three years to protect the victim.
